Every year, Sonoma Fencing Academy holds a fencing abroad trip during Spring Break. Each year, the country visited is different and we spend roughly 10 days abroad. The total cost includes plane fare, transportation, shared hotel, and fencing. This is an amazing experience, and should not be missed! This year we are visting the beautiful city of Rome!

W H E R E
This year we are headed to the country of Italy to visit the city of Rome as well as a city located on the outskirts of Rome called Frascati. Frascati is a quaint little city in which the prestigious fencing club, Frascati Scherma, is located. This is where we will be doing most of our actual fencing and we will be taking a train to Frascati from Rome.

W H E N
We will be departing this Spring Break on April 12, 2008. We are due to return on April 21, 2008. Sign up is due by March 1, 2008.

Imagine this: not only will you be given the experience to visit an absolutely amazing, new country, but you will get to fence as well! How many people can say they have gone to Italy, let alone gone to Italy to fence? Going abroad gives you a brand new experience of the new and exciting culture, and when you return home you have a new found appreciation. Stop watching everybody else do it on television, and go out there and experience it firsthand! It will be an experience you will never forget.

F E N C I N G
We will be fencing every day, Monday through Friday, sometimes twice a day at the prestigious Frascati Scherma Club located in Frascati (located on the outskirts of Rome; we will arrive by train) when we're not site-seeing and what not. Just like here, there will be warming up (whether it is with their club or on our own) and then free fencing with the members of the club. You will be required to bring your own equipment INCLUDING knickers. For more info on what to pack, click here.

Many of the fencers at this particular club, Frascati Scherma, are very experienced, including internationally renown fencers like Luigi Tarantino. However, there are fencers of all levels, so this is excellent for getting all sorts of experience. Fencing these individuals hons your skills amazingly and serves as an outstanding improvement, especially because the training in Italy tends to be quite different from our own.

P A C K I N G
We HIGHLY recommend you pack all of your clothes in your FENCING BAG so that you do not have to lug around two bags. Please realize that we will be going through airports and boarding trains, so it will be much easier if you only have to carry one bag. We recommend that you do not bring any jewelery or expensive items unless you are prepared to keep a close eye on them. You don't want them to get lost. Here is a recommended list of things to bring...

Fencing equipment:
-Knickers
-Two body cords (just in case!)
-Two foils (better safe than sorry)
-Jacket
-Lame
-Glove
-Mask
-Chest protector (if necessary)
-Arm guard
-Fencing socks
-Fencing shoes?

General packing:
-Plenty of shirts to fence in
-LOTS of underwear (you won't want to spend the remainder of the day in sweater underwear after fencing...)
-Your everyday clothes (shoes, socks, shirts, pants, etc.)
-Bring a nice jacket to stay warm! We recommend layers.
-Maybe a nice outfit or two in case we all go out to a nice restaurant
-Toiletries (toothpaste, brushes, etc.)
-Emergency credit card
-Plenty of cash (there are places to exchange dollars for Euros. Talk to Maestro about this)
-Any perscription medicine that you require
-Carry on items for the plane!

Feel free to bring food and beverages on with your carry on luggage (your luggage to come with you on the plane). Do rememer that any food/liquid that you bring on the plane have to be SEALED and UNOPENED. It will be a long trip flight, so bring plent of entertainment like books and such. Although there will be movies on the plane, it is still nice to have your own things. They will serve you free breakfast/lunch/dinner on the plane, so don't worry.
