Host Families WantedLisa Breschi Almond, the local EHP Program Leader at lisabreschi@comcast.net or 823-0744. "Breaking Down Barriers of Culture, Geography and Language, One Memory at a Time" I am seeking a host family for Patricia, who is a German high school student that will be visiting the Santa Rosa area for the month of July. As she is a co-trainer at her fencing club back in Germany, I would love to match her with a family that is involved with your academy. Patricia, and the other 24 German students, will arrive in the Santa Rosa area on June 30th and depart July 26th. The students are involved in an exchange program that provides English classes in the mornings and then a cultural activities program every afternoon, of which members of the host family are welcome to attend. Weekends are free to spend time with host families. We are asking that a host family open their homes and their hearts by providing a place at the table and an available bed for Patricia (and others). Students do not need their own rooms, and we can provide roll-away beds for families that have the space but need an extra bed.
SFA Patches UpdatePatches have arrived! Please inquire with Kristin Baybayan for your patch. Photos Wanted for Web GalleryAs you may know, the website will be under construction over the summer. At this time, we will be working on a photo gallery. We would really love to gather your photos from foil, epee and saber events. It doesn't matter what age or where it is, as long as they show you fencing, that would be great! Please e-mail us at info@sonomafencing.com to have your photo added to the gallery.Summer Fencing Schedule: NO MORE THURSDAYSAs of this week, there will NO fencing on Thursdays. June 3 ,2008June Fencing CampSummer is near and the school semester is almost over or it's already finished for some of you. You've already signed up for the Sonoma Fencing Academy patch and you're getting ready for nationals in July. You've gone to the workshops. You've been fencing every week. But nothing will prepare you more than this June fencing camp. Both beginners and advanced students are encouraged to join. " As a beginner fencer, (I've only been competing for 5 months and fencing for 1 year), I can honestly say that my private lessons, workshops, and camps have advanced my fencing tremendously. Without the guidance, expertise, support and encouragement from Michael, I would not have excelled this quickly. I know for a fact that this fencing camp will not only help your children advance in their fencing, but will also teach them discipline, while having fun at the same time. " - Kristin Baybayan If you're a parent, this is an opportunity for you to enjoy some free time to yourself or have your fencer in good hands as Maestro Pacheco will be both looking after them while strengthening them for their tournaments. If they are beginners, this is their chance to have fun while learning something new and improving their abilties. Equipment will be provided. Please remember to bring a sack lunch and plenty of water. You MUST register before the camp. Please inquire with Maestro Pacheco DIRECTLY in person or on the phone: (707) 763-8290. Summer Fencing ScheduleThe new summer fencing schedule will take place shortly after Nationals in July. Please keep an eye out for flyers posted with the new fencing club times. Blast from the Past!Make sure to check out the Blast from the Past Bulletin Board to check for some familiar faces, including Maestro Pacheco! If you have photos you'd like to submit for the website, please e-mail us at info@sonomafencing.com. We will be adding a photo gallery to the website over the summer so we would love to see you in action! Fencing BBQ After Nationals: SAVE THE DATEThe BBQ for SFA is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 12th. Plan on playing soccer, eating BBQ, and, of course, talking about fencing! Time and location are pending, but remember to save the date. May 27,20082007-2008 Fencing Season Drawing to a CloseThe 2007-2008 fencing season is nearing the end with Summer Nationals right around the corner. We would like to thank all of the parents and fencers who have supported and encouraged Sonoma Fencing Academy this season. We also wanted to tell you about the updates coming up and what changes to expect after your return from the summer. Maestro Pacheco is so proud to see all his students advance in their fencing this season. Marc Klunk has accelerated in epee and foil with Brian Howard alongside in foil. Brothers Cody and Dylan Johnson have been diligently improving, with Cody earning his E this season. Rod Swisher and Jordan Arico both successfully petitioned for National Qualifiers for their division. Emily DeOrnellas renewed her E rating and shortly afterwards, earned her D at the Senior D and Lower Women's Foil at Cardinal at Stanford . DeOrnellas also qualified for Division III Senior Women's Foil for Nationals. Kristin Baybayan took 3rd at Cardinal and also earned her E rating in her first year of competition. We also have a Senior Women's Foil Team taking SFA to Nationals, dubbed "G-BAD" (an acronym for the last names of all the women on the team: Brittany Griffin, Kristin Baybayan, Jordan Arico and Emily DeOrnellas). Griffin , Baybayan and DeOrnellas participated in the Senior Women's Foil Team at the Pacific Coast Championships in Pasadena, taking home the bronze. Aside from competitions, we've also held numerous workshops and tournaments here at Sonoma Fencing Academy which improved the skills of our fencers. Our Mega Workshop Weekend was a hit, especially with the sleepover hosted by the Johnsons, where Maestro Pacheco cooked pizza and baked his infamous tiramisu, all from scratch! After dinner, the kids played video games and prepared for the 2nd day of the workshop. Our Beginner’s Tournament, which will now be an annual event, allowed parents and new fencers to see what tournaments are like. If you haven’t participated in these workshops or tournaments, we encourage you to look into this as many of our advanced fencers can vouch for how much this has increased their fencing abilities and talents. There will be a fencing workshop on Saturday, May 31 this weekend. There are two important fencing camps that you can still join, one this coming June 23rd through June 27th and another in August. Be sure to pick up the flyers available in the club on your way in or out. Private lessons are also encouraged to improve your fencing and these can be taken every week. Please inquire with Maestro Pacheco if you are interested or would like more information. For the next fencing season at Sonoma Fencing Academy, expect to see more workshops, bulletin boards, pictures and more medals! If you haven’t already checked out the website, we have been adding the Weekly Events E-mail to the home page and current events have been updated on a weekly basis to keep you in the know about our events and competitions you should be fencing in. Also, it is always exciting to see new faces in the club so if you have friends that might be interested, please remember to have them tag along. First lesson and class is always a free session and it gives them a chance to experience how much fun we have here at Sonoma Fencing Academy. Thank you to those who have brought people so far. Remember, they can always carpool with you if you set up a system so that everyone can save gas and still get to fence. Congratulations again to all of the fencers who will be fencing at Summer Nationals in San Jose . We encourage all the beginners to take private lessons or participate in a workshop or camp so that you, yes you, can be at Nationals, fencing for Sonoma Fencing Academy and for yourself! There is no greater joy than that feeling after winning a competition knowing that all that hard work has paid off. Thank you again to all of the fencers, to Coach Carmello, to Administrative Assistant Brittany Griffin, to Special Events Coordinator Kristin Baybayan and above all, thank you to Maestro Michael Pacheco. Without his experience, his support, encouragement and belief in us, we would not be here at the top of our game. He is constantly pushing us to our limits because he sees the potential in us as both individuals and as fencers. Thank you Maestro, from all of us. Summer Fencing ScheduleKeep an eye out for the new summer fencing schedule after Nationals. Flyers will be posted and changes will be updated in the website and in the weekly e-mail. Blast from the Past!Make sure to check out the Blast from the Past Bulletin Board to check for some familiar faces, including Maestro Pacheco! November 06, 2005Fencing Tournament and Workshop SeriesSonoma Fencing Academy is introducing a new series of partner tournaments and workshops. At each event there will be an optional two hour workshop followed by a team tournament (team tourneys typically last from 2-3 hours). The workshop will cover topics and skills related to competitive fencing technique and preparation. Students sign up for both events by pre-registering prior to the event to avoid a late fee. The whole team must sign up at the same time. In other words, you have to give us two names, not just yours! It's OK to sign up for the team event and not the workshop, or vice-versa. Teams will be separated by the age categories outlined below. At each competition, teams will earn points within their respective age groups. At the end of the third tournament, the first place team in each category will be awarded a prize. Electric fencing equipment is not necessary for these events, and standard equipment will be provided to those who do not have their own.
